Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the federal national census (U.S. Constitution, Article I, sec. 2). According to the federal 2010 census, Maryland has a population of 5,773,552. In 2000, Maryland ranked 19th in the nation in population. With 529.1 persons per square land mile in 1999, it ranked 6th in population density among states (including the District of Columbia).
