Each is part of the Maryland Department of Labor.

    Information about employment within State government agencies is available from the Office of Personnel Services and Benefits of the Department of Budget and Management. Those agencies employing the most workers include the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services; the Department of Transportation; the Maryland Department of Health; and the Department of Human Services.

    In 2018, Maryland ranked third in the Milken Institute's State Technology and Science Index. The rankings are based on five categories: human capital investment; research and development inputs, risk capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure; technology and science workforce, and technology concentration and dynamism.

    In 2017, Maryland ranked fifth nationally in concentration of technology industry jobs, which constituted 9.5% of the total workforce. In Maryland, the average annual wage for employees in this field is $109,964. Some 14,840 tech businesses were located in Maryland as of 2017.

  • Approximately 81.6% of those working in Maryland are employed by the private sector, while federal, State, county and municipal governments employ 18.4% of the workforce.

The System employs 39,900 faculty and staff. Other leading employers in the State include University of Maryland Medical System; The Johns Hopkins University; Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System; MedStar Health; and Marriott International.

Corporate headquarters of well-known businesses, such as McCormick, Lockheed Martin, Under Armour, DAP, Phillips Seafood, T. Rowe Price, and Goetze's Candy are located in Maryland.

    Financial services is a growing sector in the Maryland economy. Brokerage firms, insurers, and other financial companies maintain their home operations or a significant presence in the State.

    In 2017, government employees in Maryland numbered 487,036. Of these, 146,707 were federal workers, 97,770 worked for State government, and 242,559 were employed by county and municipal governments.
