In 2017, Diageo, one of the world's largest producers of alcoholic beverages, announced its plan to build a Guinness brewery and taproom in Halethorpe, Baltimore County. The Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House opened in August 2018 and is the company's sole brewery in the United States.

The highest employment of 2017 in Maryland was in the computer and electronic products industry (17,450 jobs), the food manufacturing industry (15,610 jobs), and chemical manufacturing (12,550 jobs). The total of wages paid by Maryland manufacturers in 2017 was $8.23 billion with an average salary of $78,400.

In 2017, manufacturing provided $23.05 billion to Maryland's gross domestic product, up from $21.1 billion in 2016.

In 2016, Maryland manufacturing was led by chemical manufactures ($6.1 billion), computer and electronic product manufactures ($4.4 billion), food, beverage and tobacco manufactures ($2.86 billion), and machinery manufacturing ($1.03 billion).
